Donald Glover of NBC’s Community Mystery Team

By , May 27, 2010

The mega-popular internet comedy sketch group Derrick Comedy present their first feature-length film, Mystery Team. Donald Glover of NBC’s Community wrote the film and stars as Jason, an earnest high school senior who, along with his pals Duncan (D.C. Pierson) and Charlie (Dominic Dierkes), have never seemed to grow up from their innocent days of tree houses and Hardy Boy-style mysteries. They even have supposed special abilities, like being masters of disguise or genius-level skills of deduction. Mostly, though, they just annoy Oakdale with their do-gooder meddling.

Checkout the team talking about the movie here.

‘Big Bang’ Vs. Community

By , May 24, 2010

Grab the Thursday comedy mantle by moving Monday hit Big Bang Theory to anchor the night.

Traditionally staid CBS is making the most dramatic move for the 2010-11 TV season. Seizing the opportunity to take over the Thursday-night comedy mantle, the network will move current Monday-night hit The Big Bang Theory—which recently landed a rich syndication deal and is averaging 14.1 million viewers and a 5.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic—to 8 p.m. on Thursday. It will lead into the new William Shatner comedy $#*! My Dad Says.

“Nothing is setting the world on fire [Thursday at 8 p.m.],” noted Kelly Kahl, senior executive VP of CBS Primetime.

Formerly the time slot of iconic NBC comedy Friends, this fall Big Bang will go head-tohead with NBC’s Community, a promising comedy that is still a long way from hit status. $#*! My Dad Says, based on the Twitter phenomenon, will be competing against NBC’s 30 Rock.

‘Community’ Star Talks Of Fun With Guns, One ‘Bizarre’ Body and Two Returns

By , May 7, 2010

Fanscast has an interview with Gillian Jacobs, who plays the Britta; here are the highlights:

When Joel strips down for one scene, the guy is distractingly sculpted – like a life-size action figure.
I know, and it’s kind of intimidating. He’s already like a foot taller than me and I don’t have any muscle definition to speak of, and he has gone from being a fit guy to some sort of bizarre action-hero man.

Funny guys aren’t supposed to be that buff. Take it from me.
[Laughs] It’s a little disconcerting for other comedy guys, yeah. Joel’s upping the ante.

Speaking of that scene: Amid all this mayhem, Jeff and Britta find time for a close moment…
Given the fact that it is one episode in the arc of a season, you do have to have some character development, and I think it’s great the way they tie in the relationship. It’s a big moment for us in the middle of a big, fun episode.

And what are your own plans for “summer vacation”?
I just worked on this movie that shot in Chicago, and that was really fun. I had all my scenes with Ben McKenzie, from ‘Southland‘ and ‘The O.C.’ I plan to catch up on my sleep, travel a bit, and hopefully work a bit more!

Joel McHale: Community’s Man of Action

By , May 6, 2010 has an interview with Jeol McHale. Here are some of the highlights: Tonight’s episode, “Modern Warfare,” looks A-MA-ZING.
Joel McHale: It was the most ambitious television I’ve ever made in my life. We took eight days to shoot a 23-minute show. We basically shot an action movie. Justin Lin, who directed Fast & the Furious and who is now directing the new Highlander, directed it, and there are explosions and jumps and stunts and leaps. It all revolves around a paintball war on campus, and it was the most fun I’ve ever had shooting anything. I got to live my boyhood dream of being a Bruce Willis Die Hard character. The episode moves along so fast and it’s so action-packed, that if you’re really tired, it will wake you up.

Wow, I thought the mafia movie spoof you did two weeks ago went fast.
This week makes the food fight from last week’s episode look slow. Every scene is an action scene, it’s great.

Congratulations on the renewal, by the way; it’s well deserved. But let’s say Community goes onto Season 7 or whatever, how are we going to keep Jeff in college?
That’s a good question. I don’t know, because I’m not writing them. Dan Harmon, who kind of wanders our set like a homeless person—I’m not kidding, he looks like one because he wears the same clothes and he doesn’t shave—I know he has a plan. He’s got the vision, and I don’t question it, because he’s Dan, he’s the mad genius. I trust him implicitly on the scripts. Some of the ideas he’s come up with, from the chicken fingers to the food fight, all those things have come out of his brain. I trust him.

Community fans say favorite part of the show is last 30 seconds

By , April 23, 2010

What often getsCommunity fans buzzing is what goes on in the final 30 seconds each week.

That’s when cast member Danny Pudi, who plays Abed, gets extra play time with castmate Donald Glover, who plays Troy. They engage in simple shenanigans over the closing credits.

“It really takes you more into the world of Greendale of Abed and Troy,” said Pudi. “It almost feels like we’re shooting a web video at home with buddies.”

In fact, the very first “tag” became a viral hit on the internet. It was a nonsense rap performed in Spanish by Pudi and Glover.
