TV Guide has a theory about the show: That the characters in Community are real people who are slowly coming to the realization that they are trapped inside a TV sitcom, not dissimilar to the circumstances confronting the characters of the Jean Paul Sartre play No Exit.
Check out what the actors have to say about this theory:
Donald Glover (Troy): “Wow! That’s really cool! There’s so many things I love there — Lost, No Exit reference, which is a play I did — that is great!”
Pudi (Laughing): “I’ve been told things like that recently, like they’re all figments of Abed’s imagination.”
Brie: “Abed in a straight jacket.”
Gillian Jacobs (Britta): “I really like that. Did you ever watch that show, ‘Til Death? There was a plot line where one of the characters became convinced that he was in a sitcom, and it became even more meta than our show, if you can actually believe it.”

At 8 p.m. ET, “Community” (2.2/7 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall) jumped week to week by 22 percent in 18-49 rating (2.2 vs. 1.8) and 15 percent in total viewers (4.806 million vs.4.195 million) to match the show’s highest 18-49 rating since March 4. Despite intense time-period competition that included CBS’s “Big Bang Theory,” “Community” scored a 16 percent increase on NBC’s average in the slot for the traditional ’09-10 season (1.9, non-sports, “live plus same day”). In the time period last night, “Community” ranked #2 among NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox in men 18-34 and men 18-49 (tie).

ike many Community fans, I was disappointed to see so little of Abed in the most recent episode, and a bit perplexed when his absence was highlighted by Shirley commenting, “I barely saw you this week, Abed, what have you been up to?” Abed’s response: “Not much.” But look closer!
For the first time in TV history (that I can remember, at least), a major character was part of a storyline that took place entirely in the background of other scenes. While Jeff pondered his mortality, Pierce tried to hold on to his Mom after her death, and Annie and Britta argued over feminine wiles, Abed’s “not much” involved bringing a baby into the world.
At 8 p.m. ET, “Community” averaged a 1.8/6 in 18-49 and 4.2 million viewers overall. Despite intense time-period competition that included CBS’s “Big Bang Theory,” “Community” finished within 0.1 of a point of NBC’s average in the slot for the traditional ’09-10 season (1.9, non-sports, “live plus same day”). In the time period last night, “Community” ranked #2 among NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox in men 18-34 and men 18-49 (tie).
The study group dealt with a serious topic last night as Pierce lost his mother, but still did it with their typical comedic flair. Don’t miss the end tag from last night’s episode – it will help you keep tabs on Betty White’s Professor June Bauer!
Ep 203: It’s Not a Lava Lamp
Pierce brings his mom to Anthropology class.
Ep 203: Subversion of Reality
Now on administrative leave, Prof. June Bauer visits Mimpousa, Congo.
