“Community” and “Parks & Recreation” rose to their highest ratings in weeks on Thursday night. The NBC comedies were recently picked up for full seasons and showed spark on a night when most shows declined. While over on Fox, some viewers didn’t get the message that no Game 7 meant the return of “Fringe” — the series hit a dramatic series low.
NBC’s “Community” (5.6 million, 2.3) reached its best rating since moving to 8 p.m., while “Parks & Recreation” (4.9 million, 2.2) had its highest number since last April. Curiously, even though the earlier comedies rose, “Office” (7.9 million, 3.9) and “30 Rock” (5.9 million, 2.9) dropped about 6% each. “The Jay Leno Show” (4.7 million, 1.6) was up 7%. This is the second night this week Leno’s talk show has posted gains. Could “Leno Show” ratings finally be settling?

Coming from Time:
Community: Excellent episode for a show that has had a couple off weeks. Its a good sign that Community seems to be getting to know its characters increasingly well, as shown in little moments like Senor Chang reaching out to calm Annie’s over-emphatic hand gestures. (By the way, Alison Brie has shown flashes of comedy as Trudy on Mad Men, but she is absolutely killing on this show.) And kudos to the show for landing “Mexican Halloween sex position” at the top of the Google Trends list this morning.
(Extra credit question: When I watch Community on screener DVDs, the show’s excellent cootie-catcher title-sequence and theme song run in full, but in the episodes I’ve seen on air, the sequence is drastically cut down. Which version did you get last night?)
And The Wrap:
There’s hope for intelligent comedy. NBC’s “Community” and “Parks and Recreation” had their biggest audiences of the season. And why not? These are damn fine half-hours, particularly “Parks and Rec,” which is quickly becoming TV MoJoe’s favorite show currently airing right now. (Yes, even more than “Chuck.” But no, not as much as “Lost”).
The rating is also getting better:
NBC: “Community” (5.5 million, 3.6/6)/”Parks and Recreation” (5 million, 3.2/5)
